Channeling Giger, Lovecraft and the collective nightmares of children all over the world, Kris Kuksi makes beautifully intricate sculptures out of 'mixed media' - an assortment of materials and objects that coalesce into beauty.

Green Label Art

Mountain Dew has collaborated with select artists to do limited edition bottles entitled Green Label Art. They're cool. These bottles are aluminum and feature shrink-labels with full color graphics. Mountain Dew's move is part of a growing trend where corporate size companies sponsor artists to promote their brand.

Looks like its time for me to dust off my sketchbook and send in a few ideas. Remember the Camel Art I did awhile back. Looks like I need to do one for the Dew!

I can't recall where I was surfing yesterday, probably wired or geekologie, anyways I found these well crafted computer MODs. The first one had a link to a video that showed the construction of The Wall PC. When I find it, I'll tag an update.

The folks over at Worth 1000 (as in “a picture is worth 1000 words) recently had a Photoshop contest using Star Wars characters in classic artwork. Here are a few that I enjoyed.

Future Structures

I found this interesting article today about an auto-sufficient amphibious city.

It's 2100. Humans haven't gained control of their carbon emissions. The earth has warmed up. The oceans have risen. Millions of ecological refugees have nowhere to go. Unless, of course, they had the foresight to build Lilypads.

The brainchildren of Vincent Callebaut Architectures, the Lilypad is a design for an auto-sufficient amphibious city. If you've seen Wall-E, it's a bit like the Axiom spaceship - a giant city with everything needed for humans to survive a major catastrophe. It also looks a bit like something that might be built off the coast of Dubai.

As Lilypad's creators suggest, though, anything built on or off the coast of Dubai right now will probably be under water by 2100. A floating ecopolis, however, will be immune to such problems, rising above the water, no matter how much of the polar icecaps melt. Watching your atolls sink? No problem. Add a Lilypad. Instant atoll.

Lilypads have a further benefit. Build one or two off the coast of Dubai, Hong Kong or Monaco - and, flood or no flood, you can significantly increase the size of your kingdom or principality. Lilypads house 50,000 people, as well as plants and animals. They have lakes and mountains, schools and multiplexes.

Inspired by the great lilypad of the Amazonia Victoria Regia, the floating eco-city is designed to be made of titanium dioxide, which absorbs atmospheric pollution. It'd also be carbon-neutral, self-sufficient and entirely recyclable. Nice idea.

Fables

So way back when, in the old bygone days, I read comic books. Not the superhero, Bam! Pow! crap stuff, but the stuff of good stories. There was one series in particular I followed closely because of the great stories, great artwork, and amazing covers. These covers we done by James Jean. He has such a great style, and I recently came across his blog which he regularly updates with new pieces of artwork. (hmmm maybe I should start doing that as well.)



He has numerous prints for sell, as well as limited edition prints. And often times takes the reader through the process of creating new pieces.

Yet another "computer specific" (or rather "monitor-specific") art-form is emerging on the net - images designed for viewing by scrolling down, and down, and down - to marvel at the VERTICALLY unfolding vistas. It also can be a bit disorienting... Have a look at these examples:

You may have seen this image circulating in emails around a year ago. This photograph is probably responsible for starting it all, and certainly works very well (especially if you keep scrolling up and down, creating the swinging effect)
