Water Monster on Video!

Just watched this great video that PopCandy tipped me off to.

To promote Sony's new movie, The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, they rigged up a holographic water display in the middle of Tokyo Bay. The rig projects the monster onto a haze of water.

LiveLeak noted: What you're seeing in the video wasn't added after the fact—that's actually what it looks like in real life.
The feat uses a water screen (carefully sprayed water jet) and exact light projections to create a giant pseudo-3-D Loch Ness "Water Horse" monster in the ba More..y.

Really a well done piece of advertising and technological demonstrative achievement.

Leggo of my Lego

What a way to make a living!! Of course I came across this blurb on PopCandy, which linked to an article at Portfolio.com about Lego artist Nathan Sawaya.

"Who doesn't remember growing up playing with Legos—the small, colorful bricks that can be combined to create anything from airplanes to zebras? Most kids ultimately pack up their Legos and move on. But Nathan Sawaya never did.

The 35-year-old New Yorker makes a six-figure living as a Lego artist, creating large-scale works of art using tens of thousands of the plastic pieces. Among his recent projects are a 10-foot-tall replica of the new Trump Tower being constructed in Dubai for Donald Trump, and a four-foot-tall bumblebee commissioned by Fall Out Boy bass guitarist Pete Wentz as a gift for his new bride, pop star Ashlee Simpson. He says he receives hundreds of commission inquiries every month."

Blue

Sawaya says of Blue: "A self-made man? Or taking himself apart? I'll never tell."

Yellow

This work has become one of his signature pieces. "I guess it's because opening up oneself to the world is not an easy thing to do," Sawaya says.

Gray

Sawaya jokes that the inspiration for this piece was the time he was trapped in a cardboard box.

Bumblebee

Sawaya created this four-foot-tall work for Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz as a gift for his new bride, pop star Ashlee Simpson.

Reflection

This piece is a reflection of how Sawaya sees the world in Lego bricks.

Rebirth of New Orleans

The New Orleans Public Library commissioned this work from Sawaya to celebrate the city's rebirth. It contained over 120,000 bricks and took over six weeks to build.

Your Yearbook Pic! ...from any era

Hmmm, this guy looks an awful like the mailman that frequented our house back in the early 70's. I wonder...

So another good time waster has presented itself to me through PopCandy again. Heather writes:

For the next 15 minutes, YearbookYourself.com might be the best time-waster on the Internet.

The concept: Upload your photo, and the site shows what you'd look like in several decades, all the way up to 2000. If you choose the right pic, the results can be pretty hilarious -- I've included a retro image of myself. All that's missing is a dancefloor (and maybe Mr. Kotter?).

Once you're done, you can send a "homeroom" link of photos to your friends.

M&M Characters

Yet again, I found myself creating a nifty little avatar dude. This time as an M&M character.

I found the site through Popcandy, and Whitney had this to say:

"Apparently, the company's new ad campaign aims to humanize its candy more than ever before. I ask you: Is there anything more frightening than the sight of Mary Lou Retton ... as an M&M?

Bobby Flay also appears in M&M's new celebrity gallery, which has sparked some sort of new phobia within my soul that I've yet to name. Not only is it just wrong to see an M&M donning a hairpiece, but I can't help but wonder why the meltable version of Flay is perched next to an open flame.

Those who harbor no fear of human M&M's may be interested in the website's "Create Your Character" feature, which allows anyone to become Candy-ized."

I've got mine rockin' a microphone, like I'm up on the stage or some sort. :)

Condiments?

So everybody collects something. Stamps, Records, Concert Tickets, Comics, lockets from that pretty red-haired girl that sits in front of you (oh wait, that's just Charlie Brown), anyways you get the drift. Well, Chris Harne collects condiment packets.

I found this interesting link over at PopCandy, as Whitney writes:

On his website, The Condiment Packet Gallery, you can view his insane collection of condiment packets: ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, whatever. (Warning: There are so many condiments, the page may take a little while to load.) If you see something missing from Chris' page, you can send him a packet.

On the site, he describes his process in great detail:

"I carefully remove the contents of my packets by slicing open the back along the bottom seam with a sharp blade. I rinse the inside of the packets thoroughly to ensure all traces of sauce are expelled. I then wait until the packets are completely dry before I place them in baseball card cases to preserve them cleanly and safely for many generations."

I'm thinking maybe this guy should follow suit and collect lockets from that cute red-haired girl. ;)

Manga Me!

So I found this website through the PopCandy and had a good time creating my own version of me as a manga.

Whitney at PopCandy had this to say: "Ever wonder what you'd look like as a wide-eyed manga character? The website FaceYourManga.com allows you to transform yourself into a manga superstar in several easy steps.
